Minikapu24 - Maximilian Fagerlund
Wasa Sinfonietta’s MiniKapu24 concert series continues in an exceptionally exciting way as 19-year-old Maximilian Fagerlund, winner of the first Jorma Panula MiniKapu Competition, takes the stage with the orchestra both as conductor and piano soloist
The concert programme is built around the theme of genius that blossomed at an early age. The evening opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s beloved Air. Mozart’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major is followed by Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
The concert offers the audience a unique opportunity to experience a young and versatile musician at a point when his career is just beginning to take its first major steps.

Fagerlund has studied orchestral conducting under Professor Emeritus Jorma Panula since 2024. He has also received instruction from, among others, Anna-Maria Helsing and Atso Almila. He is currently studying orchestral conducting at the Sibelius Academy under the guidance of Susanna Mälkki.
Conductor and soloist in the same concert
At Wasa Sinfonietta’s concert, Fagerlund will not only conduct the orchestra but will also perform as the evening’s soloist. He will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A major, playing the piano himself while simultaneously conducting the orchestra.
Fagerlund began his musical studies with piano at the age of six and is already a highly experienced performer for his age. In January 2025, Fagerlund won the Leevi Madetoja Piano Competition in the 17–30 age category. He has performed as a piano soloist with, among others, the Seinäjoki City Orchestra, Oulu Sinfonia and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. As a conductor, he made his debut in 2025 at the Kamarikesä Festival and with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
During the 2026–2027 season, Fagerlund will make his conducting debuts with, among others, Kymi Sinfonietta, Jyväskylä Sinfonia and the Seinäjoki City Orchestra. In January 2027, he will conduct the world premiere of composer Ida Moberg’s opera Asiens Ljus in Helsinki.
Fagerlund is internationally represented by the prestigious Askonas Holt.
