BLAUE FRAU: Still Looking for Rick

BLAUE FRAU: Still Looking for Rick

Blaue Frau is turning 20 and feeling discouraged. Two decades of persistent work for justice and equality have not made the world a better place. On the contrary, individualism and self-interest prevail. Internet trolls have moved into parliament. Feminism is dead — or devoted to skin care products. What happened? Where did it go wrong? Can we start over? The performance Still looking for Rick uses the 2006 debate forum www.genusdebatt.com as a starting point for an investigation of the feminist conversation then and now. Still looking for Rick is a kind of feminist true crime story where we search for the guilty but end up on winding side tracks. What has happened since 2006 and what responsibility do we bear? How far does our solidarity extend?

Can we still change things? Do we want to? (Can we? Do we dare?) And... who is Rick?

Background: In 2005, the issue of gender equality in theaters was raised in many places in Swedish Finland. The discussion was born out of frustration with the inequality of theatre in Finland; inspiration and information came from Sweden, where the issue of gender inequality in theatre was debated even at the national level. In the autumn and spring that followed, the subject was discussed in many different places in the Finnish-Swedish theatre; radio documentaries and television programmes were made, the issue was discussed in articles and on the letters pages of newspapers and, not least, in the corridors and backstage areas of the theatres themselves. Among the most vocal were Joanna Wingren and Sonja Ahlfors, a duo who had just founded a new feminist theater group: Blaue Frau.

The 2005-06 gender equality debate was unique in several ways. It raised questions about sex and gender, it questioned and problematized the concept of quality, and not least, it considered gender inequality to be a matter of concern for everyone - not only for those who suffered from its drawbacks. But the debate was also unique because it went online.

In 2005, Facebook and social media were not yet household words. Online discussion forums existed, but they were not where conversations about Finland-Swedish theater were expected to take place. Nevertheless, in February 2006, stay-at-home dad Jonte Wingren decided to open the website www.genusdebatt.com (genderdebate.com) as a possible forum for the then intense, but slowly raging, debate. The impact was immediate. In February, over 200 posts were published by more than 70 commentators, and the pace continued in March. And even more people clicked through to read what had been written. In 2006, the site had over 50,000 visitors.

One of the people who found the site was Rick. Rick eventually became the site’s most active debater, not so much interested in solving gender inequality as in rejecting the whole issue and engaging in inappropriate attacks behind the protection of anonymity. The page, which initially exuded hope and creativity, increasingly became an animated discussion with Rick. Debaters dropped off one by one and only a handful remained when the site was shut down in January 2007.

Blaue Frau (www.blauefrau.com) is a Finnish-Swedish feminist theater company that has created 38 performing arts works since its founding in 2005. The group works thematically, non-hierarchically, conceptually, site- and time-specifically and participant-based. In recent years, Blaue Frau has invited the audience to various site-specific performing arts works in Helsinki and the Nordic countries. Often intimate encounters with the audience have been created and this interaction between performer and audience is a significant part of Blaue Frau’s artistic practice. During its 20 years of activity, the Helsinki-based performing arts group has made a strong contribution to the norm-critical scene in the Nordic countries, with a focus on power and gender. Blaue Frau is run by actors, artistic directors and producers Sonja Ahlfors and Joanna Wingren.
