Two full concerts devoted to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven? An unbeatable idea, especially when the conductor and piano soloist is Olli Mustonen, one of Finland’s leading interpreters of Beethoven. As both a composer and piano virtuoso, he gains direct access to the inner world of his Viennese master colleague, resulting in profound and captivating interpretations, not without a touch of humor. Both in the orchestral concert and in Mustonen’s solo piano recital, works from Beethoven’s early period. still firmly rooted in Classicism, as well as from the years shadowed by worsening deafness are performed, a time during which many of his most beloved compositions were nevertheless created.
