Philomela, established in Helsinki in 1984, will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. Philomela has focused on Finnish and Nordic music, which often originate from folk tradition. The choir breaks the conception of traditional choir singing and always wants to surprise its audience in some special way. In the choir’s concerts, a mutual musical experience is created between the audience and the choir. Marjukka Riihimäki, Director Musices (Finnish honorary title), who has led the choir laudably and with great passion from the very beginning, considers an evocative style of composition, a versatile vocal and courageous overall expression to be important in her repertoire choices. She is said to play her choir as an instrument.
The Time of WolfThe time of the wolf, based on Kalevala's poetry and folk songs, has become Philomela's business card. The time of the wolf is a journey to a woman's soul life and to finding herself; it is a story about a young woman's mistakes in life and the price for them. The work was composed by Tellu Virkkala (now Turkka) and has been visualized and directed by Päivi Järvinen. The time of the wolf is a very intimate performance, which offers deep emotional experiences and makes you pause. The performance is not recommended for children under 7 years of age. The duration of the performance is approximately 45 minutes.
